The Shawnee Mission Islamic Education Center (SMIEC), an IRS 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, was registered in the State of Kansas in 2010. We have organized salat-al-Juma’h at a rented facility in Lenexa, Kansas since 2001, conducted Taraweeh prayers at various locations in north-central Johnson County, and ran a weekend Islamic academy for children at the Matt Ross Community Center. Some of our programs could not be offered on a regular basis due to lack of our own place, which motivated us to have our own Islamic center to serve the need of the area Muslims on an uninterrupted basis.
Alhamdu’llilah, with support of our generous community, we were able to purchase a church in Merriam, Kansas in August 2019 for $327,000. The first phase of remodeling work started in fall, costing $130,000. We are now ready to open the masjid. A $96,000 interest-free loan was obtained from the North America Islamic Trust to finish the first phase. We now need $250,000 to complete Phase 2, comprising parking lot, and exterior work along with re-payment of the loan.
We envision SMIEC to serve as a central place for meeting the religious and educational needs of Muslims residing in the north and central Johnson County, Kansas and neighboring communities in the greater Kansas City area.
In addition to regular religious services, we plan to offer educational seminar, workshops, and lectures on a variety of topics of interest to our community members. Noted national scholars will be invited for special lectures. We will resume our weekend children academy, and expand our English language (ESL) classes for refugees and new immigrants. High school students will be tutored in STEM area and offered guidance in obtaining admission and financial assistance to attend college.
