Shanghai, also called "Hu" or "Shen" for short, is one of the four municipalities dependent on the Chinese central government. Known as "the pearl of the East," Shanghai is China's largest economic metropolis and one of the modern international metropolises. The majestic buildings along the Bund, built mainly between 1873 and 1937, are considered the crystallization of modern architecture, as well as a summary of the development of the city over the last 100 years.

Being the "gallery of modern international architecture" for the harmonious combination of styles, the Bund is considered an important testimony of cultural exchanges between China and the West.
