Saratov map

Saratov is a city in European Russia, capital of the homonymous oblast, located 200 m above sea level. on the heights that dominate the right bank of the Volga, where is its river port, important for oil traffic. Cultural center, it has a university, various institutes and high schools, theaters and numerous museums. Large cereal market and home to numerous industries: mechanical, chemical, electrotechnical, oil refining, food. Extraction of oil and natural gas (starting point of a gas pipeline to Moscow); railway and road junction.

Founded around 1590 as an outpost against the peoples of the steppe, the fortress of S. was destroyed during the revolt of the Cossacks (1670-71); rebuilt on the right bank of the Volga, it was occupied in 1773-74 by E. Pugačëv. With the development of Russian colonization on the lower Volga, it became an active commercial center, in 1780 the capital of the viceroyalty and in 1797 of the governorate of the same name, remaining since then the most important city in the Volga region.
