Mywell APP
Groundwater is an invisible resource and the data collected through this app can help us to visualise this vital resource and make more informed decisions about groundwater use and sharing.
The app was developed during the MARVI project (http://www.marvi.org.in/), and it is designed to assist volunteers, called Bhujal Jaankaar (Hindi word meaning ‘groundwater informed’) to report data for online storage and easy access by anyone who is involved in groundwater management.
The app enables ordinary people in urban and rural areas to monitor data and share them publicly. This will help in a better understanding of the local water situation and developing effective ways to sustain groundwater use and recharge based on locally collected data.
The groundwater level fluctuation over time, alongwith rainfall and check dam water level data, can be used to estimate groundwater recharge following rainfall events. The estimation of recharge can help in planning for the cropped area in the next season and cooperative management of groundwater.
MyWell will always remain a public domain and non-profit making tool for monitoring groundwater levels and other water parameters in any part of the world.
The app can be used for visualising and analysing water data for a given location. Four main types of data that can be uploaded: (i) depth to groundwater level, (ii) rainfall amount, (iii) checkdam water level and (iv) water quality parameters.
In addition, the app can also be used for collecting and visualising the data for (i) River flow rate and water depth, (ii) Spring discharge, (iii) Rainwater tank water level and (iv) Reservoir water level.
The app can be used by watershed development program agencies, groundwater departments, farmers, NGOs, water practitioners, school students and ordinary citizens who wish to monitor, create awareness and develop water management solutions based on local data.
In general, MyWell is an important tool for crowdsourcing data and can be used by anyone who is interested to monitor local groundwater levels and other parameters and want to share those data publicly for non-commercial purposes. The app was developed for monitoring groundwater and other parameters in rural catchments but it is equally useful in urban and peri-urban catchments.
