Cokelat was established on June 25, 1996, and is still active in coloring the stage of Indonesian music. Kikan, Ronny, Robert, Bernard, and Deden were confused about finding a name that was suitable for them, because they were going to be performing at an STISI campus (Indonesian College of Fine Arts & Design) at that time in one of the cities that became Indonesian music epicenter, Bandung. The word "Chocolate" is indeed spoken from a spontaneity, but without losing its meaning, namely a candy food that tastes sweet rather bitter or vice versa and is liked by many people. Even the word Chocolate is easy to remember.

As a representation of life, Chocolate food brings everyone to feel the bitter and sweetness of life, where there is a sweet experience, there is a bitter experience, there are sweet memories, there are bitter memories, or actually the name Chocolate initiative was born because four bitter guys and one sweet girl? It seems like that is not all that important, because Cokelat has achieved its dream to continue working and exist in the music scene.

Cokelat has undergone several personnel changes. Initially there was Kikan, Ronny, Robert, Bernard, and Deden, then when recording the "Indie Ten" compilation album (1998) Ervin took over from Deden, then when the album "For the Stars" (2000) Edwin entered replacing Bernard and Robert's release before the album "Rasa Baru" (2001) and until now Cokelat has found a new formation
